The 8000 Base Camp Challenge Origin Story

How it all Began

The story of the 8000 Base Camp Challenge begins long before the idea had a name. On my first big trip overseas  many years ago, I  spent the summer backpacking through India and Nepal.   In northern India, I set out on my first high‑altitude trek—a  month-long adventure that took me from Srinagar in Kashmir to Leh in  Ladakh, through rugged mountain landscapes, over a snowy 5,700‑metre  pass, across freezing glacier‑fed rivers, and to remote, centuries‑old  Tibetan monasteries perched on sheer cliffsides.

This  was before smartphones and the internet - we were truly off the grid.  When I returned back home in Canada months later, I brought back a deep  appreciation for just how vast and extraordinary the world truly was.  That journey sparked a lifelong passion for mountain trekking that has  never faded.

A Life-Long Trekker

Since then, I’ve been fortunate to explore  high places across the globe—from climbing Indonesian volcanoes like Mt.  Tambora (2,722 m) to standing atop Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), the roof  of Africa. One of my most meaningful treks was with my daughter,  celebrating her university graduation by hiking to Everest Base Camp in  Nepal (5,364 m)—our first 8,000 m peak base camp. Because it also serves  as the base camp for Lhotse, we came home with two 8K base camps under  our belts.

After  completing several more 8,000 m base camp treks—Annapurna I, Manaslu,  Broad Peak, and K2—a crazy thought suddenly struck me one day.

What if I tried to attempt all fourteen 8,000 m base camps?

That spark became the foundation for something bigger

The Vision

Inspired by iconic mountaineering challenges like the Seven Summits and the 14 Peaks, the goal of the 8000 Base Camp Challenge  is to bring together a global community of trekkers who share the same dream—to reach all fourteen 8,000‑metre base camps.

The Challenge aims to:

  • Connect and motivate participants from around the world.
  • Celebrate and share participants’ stories and milestones, from their first base camp to their fourteenth.
  • Inspire other adventurers to join the Challenge.

Whether you’re just beginning your 8000 Base Camp Challenge journey or nearing its completion, we’re here to support and cheer you on.

Join the Challenge

The mountains are calling—and the journey is  every bit as meaningful as the destination. I look forward to the day I personally complete the Challenge, but I also love the process of  planning and anticipating my next base camp trek.

If you’re a trekker who dreams big, loves the mountains, and thrives on adventure, the 8000 Base Camp Challenge might be exactly what you’re searching for.

Happy trekking everyone!
