The Fourteen 8,000 m Summits

Map credit: SY (Wikipedia)

Where are they located?

Only  fourteen mountains on Earth rise above 8,000 metres (26,247 feet), and  all lie almost entirely within three countries: Nepal, China (Tibet),  and Pakistan. A number of summits straddle international borders, while  others sit fully within a single country.

  • Nepal - China border: Everest (8,849 m) | Lhotse (8,516 m) | Makalu (8,485 m) | Cho Oyu (8,188 m)
  • Nepal - India border: Kangchenjunga (8,586 m)
  • Nepal: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Manaslu (8,163 m) | Annapurna (8,091 m)
  • Pakistan - China border: K2 (8,611 m) | Broad Peak (8,051 m) | Gasherbrum I (8,080 m) | Gasherbrum II (8,034 m)
  • Pakistan: Nanga Parbat (8,125 m)
  • China: Shishapangma (8,027 m)

Multiple base camps exist

Many of the 8,000 m peaks have more than one base camp—sometimes  located in different countries. For example, Mt Everest has both  Nepalese and Tibetan base camps on opposite sides of the mountain.  (Kangchenjunga also has a trekking base camp in Sikkim, India.) Some  base camps, however, may be inaccessible to trekkers or used more by  climbing expeditions.

Special note about 8,000 m base camp trekking itineraries

Itineraries offered by trekking companies can vary widely in both  duration and cost, influenced by several factors. These include the  level of service and support provided, the use of local versus  international guides, and the addition of extra days for side trips or  acclimatisation. The sample itinerary provided for each 8K base camp  trek on this website is just one of many possible options you can choose  from
