Gear Tips for 8,000 m Base Camp Treks (by Difficulty Tier)

Why these gear recommendations: You’re never far from shelter, food, or help. Weather is variable but manageable.

Terrain: Trails, no glacier travel | Accommodation: Guest houses

Goal: Comfort & basic cold protection

Essential Gear (see also downloadable Gear Check List for other items):

  • Backpack with rain cover: 20-35L (if using porters), 40–60L (if not using porters)
  • Footwear: Full ankle covering trekking boots (broken in)
  • Clothing:  Light/medium base layers (synthetic or merino) | synthetic fleece  jacket | lightweight down jacket (<150 g fill) | waterproof/windproof  jacket and pants
  • Sleeping bag:  Rated to –10°C (guest houses can be cold)
  • Accessories:  Trekking poles | Sunglasses (UV400) | Buff/neck gaiter | Warm hat & gloves | Sunhat | Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Hydration:  2 × 1 L water bottles or hydration bladder | Water purification tablets or filter
  • Electronics:  Power bank (10,000–20,000 mAh)
  • Other: Sunscreen SPF 50 |  Lip protection SPF 30 | First aid kit

Why these gear recommendations: You’re now in places where weather can turn quickly and infrastructure is more limited.

Terrain: Remote trails | Accommodation: Guest houses
Goal: More insulation & more self‑sufficiency

Additional Gear (on top of Tier 1 Gear)

  • Sleeping bag: Upgrade to –15°C rating or add bag liner
  • Footwear:  Gaiters (for snow sections) | Micro-spikes
  • Clothing:  Upgrade to medium-weight down jacket (150-300g fill)
  • Electronics:  Larger power bank (20,000–30,000 mAh)

Why these gear recommendations: You’re now in true expedition terrain — long days, high passes, and no easy exits.

Terrain: High passes, snowfields, remote valleys | Accommodation: Guest houses / Camping

Goal: Expedition‑grade warmth & camping gear

Additional Gear (on top of Tier 2 Gear)

  • Sleeping bag: Upgrade to –20°C rating or add bag liner | High‑R‑value sleeping pad (R 5+)
  • Footwear: Stiffer boots (B2 recommended)
  • Clothing: Upgrade to heavy down jacket (>300g fill) | Heavier base layers - tops & bottoms
  • Electronics: 40,000 mAh or 2 x 20,000 mAh power banks | Solar panel charger
  • Navigation:  Offline maps (e.g. Gaia GPS, AllTrails)
  • Other: Satellite communicator (e.g. Garmin InReach / Zoleo) -  also ask your trekking company if they provide

Why these gear recommendations: You’ll be spending two weeks on a glacier, far from rescue, in harsh weather.  This is the closest you can get to an 8,000‑meter expedition without  climbing on one.

Terrain: Glaciers, moraines, snowfields, remote valleys | Accommodation: Camping

Goal: Full expedition kit — glacier‑capable, cold‑resistant, self‑reliant

Additional Gear (on top of Tier 3 gear)

  • Clothing: Upgrade heavy down jacket (400g fill) | Expedition mitts | Balaclava
