6. Cho Oyu Base Camp Trek (Nepal)

Trek Overview

Journey to the “Turquoise Goddess,” Cho Oyu, the world’s  sixth‑highest mountain, rising along the Nepal–Tibet border. Cho Oyu's  South Base Camp (~ 5,419 m) lies near the village of Gokyo in the  western half of Sagarmatha National Park. Nearby Goyko Ri lookout offers  stunning views of Everest, Lhotse and other major peaks in the  surrounding area.


(Note: Cho Oyu's North Base Camp (~4,900 m) is located in Tibet, China and accessible by road).

  • Summit Elevation: 8,188 m (26,864 ft)
  • Base Camp Altitude: ~ 5,419 m  (~17,779 ft) 
  • Highest Trekking Point: Cho Oyu Base Camp 
  • Duration: ~11-13 days
  • Difficult Rating: Moderate to Hard
  • Best Season: April-May and September-October
  • Starting Point: Lukla, Nepal
  • Trekking distance (return): ~110 km

What to Expect

This trek offers a quieter, and possibly even more spectacular  alternative to the Everest Base Camp route, featuring turquoise  high‑altitude lakes, dramatic glacier landscapes, and close‑up views of  Cho Oyu's massive south face. Expect demanding trekking days rewarded by  some of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Khumbu region.  

Example 11-Day Itinerary (start/end Kathmandu, Nepal)

  • Day 1: Fly Kathmandu (~1,400 m) → Lukla (~2,860 m) → Phakding (~2,640 m)
  • Day 2: Phakding → Namche Bazaar (~3,440 m)
  • Day 3: Namche Bazaar - acclimatization day
  • Day 4: Namche Bazaar → Dole (~4,000 m)
  • Day 5: Dole → Machhermo (~4,410 m)
  • Day 6: Machhermo → Goyko (~4,759 m)
  • Day 7: Goyko → Cho Oyu Base Camp (~5,419 m) → Return to Goyko
  • Day 8: Side trip to Gokyo Ri lookout (5,357 m) → Return to Goyko → Machhermo (~4,410 m)
  • Day 9: Machhermo → Namche Bazaar (~3,440 m)
  • Day 10: Namche Bazaar → Lukla (~2,860 m)
  • Day 11: Fly Lukla → Kathmandu (~1,400 m)
